The Intuitive Tango Project

Learning tango through

intuition, embodied awareness, & games

Erica Skye Roper teaches tango by weaving new patterns into habitual movement. Aaron Cantor teaches partnered games that stimulate physical intelligence. Our powers combined = Intuitive Tango: learning tango through games.

We will come into the embrace and dance, cultivating deep active listening and attunement. Later, steps will be learned, but it is not where we’ll start.

We will playfully explore the conversational language of tango and emerge in co-created improvisation. With consideration of roles and positions, telescoping levels of awareness, and our relationship with the music, we will hold space for the discovery of tango technique.

Finding the solo

Tango is a partner dance but our physical partner is not our only dance.

Intuitive Tango explores our solo, our dance with ourself, finding ourself, finding our own many layers of dance, understanding where our balance is and how our bodies move before finding our partner, our partners many layers of dance and exploring the opportunities we can create together.

Finding The Solo

Exploring partnership

Intuitive Tango is about finding and the essences of Tango, for us - exquisite connection; embrace, desire, heart connection, conversation in dancing.

We can get there through a series of simple interactions, I want to be close to you, I want to stay in front of you, I want my heart to be facing your heart, I want to track where your feet are.

Improvisation happens when two wills have an idea of what's going to happen, then collide, and something slightly different happens.

Influences

Nancy Stark Smith's Under Score

Our ideas are profoundly influenced by the structures and elements of Nancy Stark Smith's Under Score bringing to awareness and conversation internal, embodied, and spatial dynamics for individuals and in relationship to others.

Contemplative Dance Practice (CDP) Barbara Dilley

Contemplative Dance Practice (CDP) was developed by Barbara Dilley, who has integrated dance and Buddhism. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Tibetan meditation master, asked her to design the dance program at Naropa University, which he founded. Barbara's book, This Very Moment, has a chapter on CDP. The practice is not led, except for the ringing of the bells noting the shift between 3 main sections: Sitting, Personal Awareness Practice, and Open Space.
